A Bit About Us
We’re a bunch of people who go to great lengths to make sure our customers are the happiest customers out there. We may sell everything from washing machines to PlayStations, but at our core we’re a people business.
We roll up our sleeves and work together to make things happen. From logistics, recycling to our award winning IT teams, almost everything we do, we do ourselves to make sure every aspect of our customer journey is done properly.
We launched in 2000 as a result of a £1 bet in a Bolton pub. 18 years later we have a 5* TrustPilot rating (after 100K reviews), expanded our business into Europe and floated on the London stock exchange, but we never lose sight of what we’re about.
More About the Role
They say all roads lead to Rome, but as an online retailer all roads lead to our checkout. It serves thousands of customers and handles millions of pounds every single day.
Based out of our new digital hub in Manchester city centre, you’ll own the design and customer experience for our Checkout. Working collaboratively as part of a cross-functional squad you’ll set the example of what product design is at ao.com.
Here's What You Can Expect to be Doing
You’ll be hands on, identifying user needs, prototyping solutions, testing ideas with UX researchers and refining designs with data and user feedback.
As a UX Lead, you’ll dedicate a portion of your time to managing two UX Designers and take responsibility for developing the UX community of practice. You’ll also collaborate with the wider design team to maintain design consistency across ao.com
You’ll work in an environment where challenging the status quo is welcomed and be surrounded by passionate specialists, relentlessly striving to create a world-class customer experience.
A Few Things About You
You love solving actual problems for real human beings and care as much about doing the right thing as you care about doing that thing right.
You are clear and passionate when it comes to articulating your design rationale to stakeholders. You know how to tell a great story.
You’re resolute in how you use insights, data and assumptions to drive design through thoughtful hypotheses.
You’ve managed or mentored other designers and helped to elevate them and the quality of their work.
You’ve had exposure to A/B and multivariate testing.
You always work with a User Researcher, or conducted your own user research.
You can share an awesome portfolio, which tells the story of your design thinking.

Our AO’ers don’t just go through the motions and follow processes, it just isn’t our thing. We don’t follow trends, we set them.
